Food Security

The development of Field of Action – Collective Food Security Project – was based on the Food Security Reference Framework drawn up in 2018 by the Sherbrooke Food Security Consultation. This document can be consulted via thenext address.

In Sherbrooke, 13.5 % of the population is in a situation of food insecurity¹.

The concept of food security means the following:

  1. Everyone has, at all times, the physical and economic means to access sufficient food to lead an active and healthy life.
  2. Everyone's ability to acquire food is guaranteed.
  3. Access to simple, reliable and objective information which allows informed choices to be made is guaranteed.
  4. The foods themselves are nutritionally satisfying and personally and culturally acceptable.
  5. Food is obtained in a way that respects human dignity.
  6. Food consumption and production are based on social values that are just, equitable and moral.
  7. Food is produced and distributed in a way that respects a sustainable agri-food system².

In terms of food safety, the main issues that have been identified by the CSAS in its reference framework are as follows:

  • accessibility to services
  • communication and awareness
  • food deserts and swamps

Regarding the issue of food deserts and marshes, 70% of the population lives more than a kilometer from a food store. 36% of the Sherbrooke population even lives more than a kilometer from a convenience store³.
